Tunde Onakoya

Founder, Chess in Slums Africa

I am Tunde Onakoya, a visionary social reformer and Nigerian National Chess Master. In 2018, I founded Chess in Slums Africa, a non-profit organization that empowers children in impoverished communities through the game of chess, providing them with access to education, technology, and mentorship. My initiative has transformed the lives of over 10,000 children, with 500 receiving fully funded scholarships, and has gained international recognition through features in outlets like BBC and Al-Jazeera.

Having grown up in the slums of Ikorodu, Lagos, I understand the challenges these children face. I embody hope and possibility, believing that "it is possible to do great things from a small place." As a passionate storyteller and public speaker, I have shared my insights on prominent stages, including TEDx talks and the DLD Conference in Germany. In 2023, I was honoured to be named one of the 100 Most Impactful Africans by Ranks Africa.

My work has earned me numerous accolades, including The Future Awards Africa Prize for Community Action and the Business Insider Award for Social Entrepreneur of the Year. I continue to inspire others, using strategic thinking and chess as powerful tools for social change.
